Readius - Cell phone with e-paper display


At Mobile World Congress 2008, Polymer Vision Ltd. showed a cell phone named "Readius", which is equipped with a rollable/foldable electronic paper display. Users can reduce the storage space of the handset by folding up the electronic-paper display. The display is extended when the handset is used, and folded when it is stored, for example, in a pocket.
Readius comes with the ability of displaying electronic books and able to play mp3 files on it. This phone supports W-CDMA and HSDPA, which enables its users to have phone calls and good data communication, also includes a Li-ion battery with nearly about 1100mAh, which can work for 30 hours on a single charge.
Polymer Vision, said it will release the phone in the middle of 2008, and the first customer will be Telecom Italia, a telecommunication company in Italy. Also plans to ship nearly about 100,000 cell phones by the end of this year. A manufacturer in Taiwan assembles the phone for Polymer Vision. The company also consulting with other potential customers.
"When we announced we are ready to begin commercial production, many carriers contacted us. Carriers in Asian countries like Japan, as well as those in other regions, showed high interest," the company said.
