Today I just found out this interesting thing, it is a Frameless Laser Harp, sounds interesting right. Anyways hers is some information relating about it. This Laser Harp happens to be at second place in Trossen Robotics Community's contest in a hot field that included a Seeing Eye robot, which can help the visually impaired people and a self-balancing motor board, which is similar to the iSlide, the most popular among the readers in recent Gizmag article.

Grand prize for the contest taken by Phoenix, a robot having six legs. The most interesting thing about this robot is its way of motion, which is some of the most convincing and eerily lifelike that we have seen in a robot that uses standard hobby servos and a common off-the-shelf servo controller. The kinematics for the robot are computed by a programmed spreadsheet. Oh, many numbers in there, good for trigonometry fans.

Now the question is, How a Laser Harp got eligible for a robotic contest. Well it is, because the Laser Harp does not actually make the sounds, it triggers the notes, which are produced on a MIDI.

Intel Six-Core Dunnington Microprocessor

As according to the Eclipse Developer Journal, Intel now planning the launch of its six-core microprocessor, which will be named as the Dunnington microprocessor. On the contrary, Dunnington will be succeeded by Nehalem micro architecture, which will support eight or even more cores. While Dunnington, is still supposed to be a hush-hush but Intel has reportedly put three dual core 45nm Penryn chips on a die the size of a postage stamp and a shared 16MB L3 cache. Dunnington still uses a front-side bus.
Dunnington will be available in a variety of SKUs and with different clock rates with power dissipation that ranges beyond 120W.
Intel is reportedly seeking how quickly they can launch Dunnington to the market before the first Nehalem chips and could appear in Q3 or in Q2.
Meanwhile, Intel introduced Skulltrail, its eight core Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform for the gaming market, which is able to support two Intel quads and Multi-card graphics from ATI or Nvidia in D5400XS board, which costs $649.

Motherboard fan powered by waste chip heat

In Taiwan, Motherboard manufacturing company MSI is working on an interesting technology with new powerless cooling fans in their labs, which harvest the heat from processor with a small Stirling Engine. It all falls under the ECO friendly project, which we hope to see in near future. Since power saving green gadgets is hotly discussed topic, MSI has employed the Stirling Engine Theory to power a cooling fan without the need of electricity.

Heat is transferred from the motherboard northbridge chipset and according to the Stirling Engine Theory it is able to spin the cooling fan and that cools down the heatsink. MSI said that they would put world’s first powerless air cooler to an Nvidia motherboard.

Bang and Olufsen showed its 32-inch LCD HDTV at the CES 2008, particularly for the US market. The design very well and carefully made so that you can easily place it on a stand, either on a TV bench, or on just the floor, just anywhere in your house, as its designer David Lewis says: “...a television designed to be used instead of being switched off in the living room for most of the day”. So use it the way you like.
For this high-def TV the entry-level price is starts at $3950, which is quite cheap then the rest of other LCD HDTV in its class.

Most of the flat screen TV produces a flat sound, but its designer David Lewis created the Orchestra Pit feature, so that sound can move forward and up like in a real orchestra. There is a bass cabinet in the front of the screen fitted with bass speakers down facing, which provides a good experience while watching movies and just listening to music. In addition, the two front units specially meant for the reproduction of the human voice, so you can hear each word as clear as it possibly recorded.

This LCD HDTV Beo Vision 8 will soon be available in all Bang and Olufsen showrooms by coming February 2008 for the said price that is $3950.

The control buttons are on one side of the headphone without having any display. You will get the preloaded SD cards with it by the SkullCandy's media partners. These headphones are rechargeable, but how you can recharge it, it is not clear yet, maybe by a USB cable. It supports SD cards of any size as said. There are no wire hanging out, so call it a wireless headphone may not be wrong, but this looks cool and funky. Today at the end of CES 2008 Samsung surprised the crowd by introducing its latest Samsung SGF-F490. It has a 16:9 wide finger touch screen. Screen measures 3.2-inch with 262k colors; design seems similar to its Prada phone. The phone supports full screen browsing in landscape and portrait mode, it has a 5 Mega-pixel camera, 130Mb of internal storage facility with micro SD slot for storage expansion, also supports the standard 3.5mm audio jack, provides faster data connection on the road with the help of HSDPA network support. The camera can record over QVGA mode with 15fps, and can playback at VGA mode with 30fps video.
In addition, features integrated Google search, Samsung's Croix user interface, and A2DP for Bluetooth stereo support.

The Samsung SGH-F490 measures 115mm x 53.5mm x 11.8mm (4.5" x 2.1 x .5") in size and weighs 102g (3.6oz). It supports GSM/EDGE connections on the 900, 1800, and 1900MHz bands, and UMTS/HSDPA networks that use the 2100MHz band.

Iomega Zip Drive is back as Rev

This test was carried in urban environment using the spectrum of 2.65GH z, the peak download speed at this spectrum recorded 173Mbps; this was the best result then all earlier tests. LTE can provide the combination of bandwidth, range, scalability, and low power that users will expect from a 4G service.

The prototype base station was installed for ongoing LTE tests at the top of the Heinrich Hertz Institute building in Berlin, in urban where interference typically degrades bandwidth. Test featured multiple users connected to the new base station, giving the 173Mbps throughput was the real world peak. They also tested the LTE by putting terminals into cars and driving them 1 km away from the base station.

“We can demonstrate that LTE meets the high expectations set for this new technology,” said Nokia’s Matthias Reiss in a prepared statement. “Most importantly, we now have evidence that future LTE networks can run on existing base station sites and mobile operators can build LTE networks without requiring new antenna sites.”

Here is the is biggest rumor in the LCD making industry which really has putted big companies like Sharp, Sony, and Samsung in dilemma. Panasonic (Matsushita) and Hitachi are rumored to be talking about the specifics of this multi billion dollar panel deal. The Nikkei said "Matsushita's new LCD factory would likely make LCD panels from so-called "eighth-generation" motherglass, which is bigger and more efficient than the "sixth-generation" glass currently used at their IPS Alpha Technology joint venture".
This deal will also going to help Hitachi from its loss making business, it also provides easy burgeoning for larger LCD display likely to be 40 inch and more. And for Canon, the investment in Hitachi Displays would give it small OLED panels which it can use digital cameras and ink jet printers. Rumors are also said that Panasonic (Matsushita) and Hitachi are on their half way to get the deal finalized.

Although without having a screen, but still looks pretty great. It has 1 GB of storing capacity, USB 2.0, Lego-esque pop-out buttons, dimensions of just 1.1 inches a side, supported audio formats - mp3, wma, and wav.

It seems like a concept one, but its already there in Korea, prices are expected to be around $70.

ITRI made Digital Paper

Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has made cool new looking flexible digital paper, actually its a color 10.4 inch cholesteric LCD (Ch-LC) flexible display and a flexible LED backlighting unit (BLU). It has plastic substrates with less then the thickness of 10mm.
Imagine this that you don't have to put up heavy books or papers again, just only one flexible display will hold the potential to show them all, and how many tress we can save.

As said by ITRI, "Its structure design is simple and is both thin and light, with a thickness reduced to 50% of that of traditional color Ch-LCD displays. The flexible 10.4-inch display has an NTSC color gamut of 57%, according to ITRI".

The ITRI also introduced a flexible LED-based BLU and said it has been successfully used in a 7 inch color flexible Active Matrix (AM) LCD display.

ITRI demonstrated a monochrome Ch-LCD flexible display built by a plastic substrate and based on roll-to-roll manufacturing. Right now the width of the display 3.5 inches and the length can be produced in any size. This is the ideal product for large size public displays, the institute noted.
